Spring 2022 Broadway Openings You Don't Want To Miss
Broadway’s back, baby. After the pandemic swiftly shuttered the Great White Way’s doors in March 2020, Broadway’s bigger and better than ever, with 18 productions scheduled to open between January and April.
Broadway’s spring 2022 line-up runs the gamut of much-loved revivals to brand new productions, many of which feature stage and screens hottest stars, like Daniel Craig, Beanie Feldstein, Billy Crystal, Debra Messing, and more. Here’s a look at just some of the spring openings we’re most excited for.
BEETLEJUICE
Based on the iconic Tim Burton film “Beetlejuice,” the eye-catching musical is reopening at the Marquis Theatre after closing prematurely during the pandemic. Tickets are available through October.
BIRTHDAY CANDLES
Another performance that got cut short in 2020 but is now back to audiences’ delight, Noah Haigle’s “Birthday Candles” follows a woman who quickly experiences five birthdays from age 17 to 101 as she contemplates her life. Starring Debra Messing, the play is at the American Airlines Theatre until May 29.
Funny Girl
In one of this year’s most-anticipated revivals, “Funny Girl” is coming back to Broadway for the first time since Barbara Streisand debuted the role of Fanny Brice in 1964. If that weren’t enough, Beanie Feldstein stars as the legendary comedian with Jane Lynch as her mother. Tickets available through November at the August Wilson Theatre.
The Little Prince
A gorgeous performance of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous tale “The Little Prince” is nothing short of magical, thanks to the imaginative mix of theatrical stagecraft, aerial artistry, and choreography. The show is running now until August 14 at the Broadway Theatre.
Macbeth
Shakespeare’s abominable tale of malice, matrimony, and murder, “Macbeth” is another widely anticipated revival with a gripping new production starring Daniel Craig and Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga, running until July 10 at Longacre Theatre.
The Minutes
This new comedy from Tracy Letts covers the hypocrisy, greed, and ambition of a small-town city council meeting. The hilarious cast includes Tony winner Jessie Mueller and “Schitt’s Creek” actor Noah Reid, performing at the Steppenwolf Theatre for until July 24.
Saturday Night
Inspired by his 1992 movie, Billy Crystal headlines the new musical version of “Mr. Saturday Night” about an older washed-up comic searching for work. Crystal and the standout cast will be performing at the Nederlander Theatre until the beginning of September.
A Strange Loop
Called “some of the most vital work in American theater” by “The New York Times,” Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical follows a young, Black, queer man writing a musical about his life while wrestling with his inner thoughts. “A Strange Loop” is at the Lyceum Theatre until the beginning of September.
