As our history goes…
One such drink available at the Knickerbocker was absinthe, the controversial spirit made from wormwood, which in those days was usually consumed as a hangover cure. The New York Herald dubbed it “the boon of the morning after.” In 1912 temperance crusaders successfully lobbied the government to ban the importation and interstate distribution of absinthe, which has extremely high alcohol content and is believed by some to cause hallucinations. But the federal ban had no effect on the Knickerbocker. The only four absinthe distilleries in the nation were located in New York, so distributors didn’t have to cross state lines to deliver absinthe to The Knickerbocker’s bar.
After 1912 the Knickerbocker was one of the only legal places in the country to drink it. “Absinthe is made in America, right here in New York, and there never will be a shortage until a State law is passed forbidding its manufacture or until wormwood from which it is distilled, ceases to grow,” an anonymous Knickerbocker bartender told the Herald.
