Boasting an eagle-eye view of Times Square from its 15th floor corner perch, a fabled legend gives the Martini Suite its uniquely entertaining personality, stylish and sophisticated with an air of privilege and a bit of history. Indeed, rumor has it that the iconic drink was created in The Knickerbocker’s ornate barroom by a bartender named Martini di Arma di Taggia, “a shadowy figure” as one guest described him, who served an unfamiliar cocktail of dry gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters. Other theories abound as to the origins of this decadent indulgence, but given the hotel’s legendary reputation for extravagant food and drink, it’s perhaps not surprising that the tale persists even today.
Fittingly, this suite also features crystal glassware from the Lismore Diamond and Lismore Diamond Essence collections by Waterford, which include perfect vessels for the classic beverage. The Lismore Diamond pattern is a strikingly modern reinvention of the classic 1950s Lismore design and as timeless as the Martini itself. Characterized by intricate diamond cuts rendered in radiant fine crystal, this pattern almost seems to reflect the sprawling skyline outside the suite’s windows.
