This Season At The New York Philharmonic

Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic, or NY Phil for short, is not only one of New York City’s most lauded institutions, but one of the oldest music institutions in the U.S. Now, after two years of extensive renovations, the symphony orchestra will officially host its 2022-2023 season, starting this October, in its “home” of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.

The $550 million project has completely reimagined — and reinvigorated — David Geffen Hall to be more inviting to a variety of audiences as well as offer a number of unique spaces for different kinds of performances, ranging from intimate to broadcasted. Along with an aptly named Grand Promenade, complete with an impressive bar, the remarkable theater will have state-of-the-art sound equipment and acoustics for an even more immersive musical experience, as well as a welcome center and cafe, and “sidewalk studio” designed for smaller performances and testing out new programming (see below).

To kick off the season, which officially begins October 7 and is already slated with 150 concerts, NY Phil is planning a month-long festival, including appearances by renowned musicians and composers, concerts exploring current social and political issues, and a world premiere from trumpeter Etienne Charles, known for his unique style blending elements of Trinidadian music with jazz. The coming months are expected to see even more performance announcements, including talk of a new pay-what-you-can NY Phil @ Noon series held at the sidewalk studio.

For families, NY Phil’s Young People’s Concerts, a concert tradition made famous by Leonard Bernstein that’s been around for more than 50 years, and family-friendly holiday concerts showcasing Handel’s “Messiah” are all part of the performance lineup.

Free Concerts In The Parks This Summer

If you’re visiting New York City this summer, you can get a taste of the NY Phil experience before its season starts ——and at no cost. First started in 1965, the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks series has also been on pause for the past two years but is back in 2022 with four performances at different parks throughout the city in June:

June 14: Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx
June 15: Great Lawn, Central Park, Manhattan
June 16: Cunningham Park, Queens
June 17: Prospect Park, Brooklyn

All performances begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be followed by a fireworks display — not bad for a free show!
