“There are Campari lovers and there are Campari haters,” says Charlie Palmer at the Knick head bartender Karma Jamyang. On a recent evening, the smell of fresh basil wafted over the bar as Jamyang prepared a round Green Negronis. Fellow bartender Zach McGrath created the signature Negroni drink precisely to win over the haters.
In honor of Negroni Week, here’s how to make the Green Negroni—the Knickerbocker’s negroni with a twist.
1oz gin (Charlie Palmer at the Knick uses Hendrick’s)
1oz St Germain
6 basil leaves
Muddle four basil leaves.
Stir all ingredients together.
Cynar is an Italian liqueur made from multiple herbs, including artichoke.
Serve on the rocks and garnish with remaining basil.
Smack basil leaves on the counter first, to reinvigorate the flavor. “This is our own twist on the negroni,” Jamyang explains. “We wanted to make a version that wasn’t so polarizing.”
