With so much to do in New York City, it is entirely possible to spend almost all of your time indoors, enjoying the restaurants, museums, landmarks and clubs. One thing locals will tell you, however, is that a warm, sunny day in the city is an experience not to be missed. Here are our top five recommendations for enjoying a beautiful day in the city.
Hit the Beach
It’s easy to forget that there’s water so close to the neon lights of Times Square, but remember that Manhattan is an island, and was once one of the greatest port cities in the world. Although there are no beaches on the island itself, a quick trip to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx will have you enjoying the sand and sun in no time.
For those looking for thrills with their beach day, we recommend visiting Coney Island, and riding the historic Cyclone Rollercoaster before cooling off in the water. For those looking for a quieter beach experience, filled with pretty views of the surrounding nature, a trip to Orchard Beach in the Bronx is just the ticket. And, for a family trip to the dunes, head out to Rockaway Beach in Queens. As the Ramones famously sang “it’s not hard, not far to reach”, although we suggest not hitching a ride (unless it’s from a Knickerbocker Hotel employee).
Picnic in the Park
When the warm weather hits, you’re only a blanket and some snacks away from the perfect picnic! The big boys like Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Flushing Meadow Park in Queens have plenty of room to spread out for a private meal on the grass, but don’t forget the numerous smaller parks around the city as well. After all, some of our favorite parks are the ones off the beaten path a bit.
Also, be sure to check the park’s schedule when you pick your destination. Many spend the summer showing films out doors and hosting great free concerts.
Take a Spin
A wise person once said that you don’t truly know a city until you’ve navigated it on a bicycle. Okay, maybe we were the ones that said it, but we’re sticking by it!
Traverse the hills, and curves (yes, Manhattan has BOTH) on a bicycle, and be sure to grab your camera to Instagram all of the beautiful sights that you are guaranteed to see. It’s easy to reserve a Citibike, or ask at our Front Desk for bicycle rental options nearby.
Take a (Historic) Hike
There are numerous historic walking tours running daily in NYC to partake in, or you can do our favorite thing and just wander the streets. You’ll find out a lot about historic buildings, streets and businesses if you keep your eyes open. We also enjoy (and highly recommend) the “that looks old/strange/amazing, better Google it” adventure.
Raise the Roof
Not up for all of the travel around the city? We understand. After all, you traveled all this way to NYC to relax, right?
For those nodding their heads in agreement, we have a simple suggestion. After you check-in, walk to the elevators and take it to the top. Our rooftop bar and lounge, St. Cloud, is opening this season, and is the perfect place to lean back and sip a martini. It’s vacation, and you’ve earned it.
