    Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • Built in 1906 by visionary real estate mogul John Jacob Astor IV, The Knickerbocker was among the first buildings to occupy Times Square, formerly Longacre Square. Astor discovered in 1901 that the original Knickerbocker Hotel location (the St. Cloud Hotel) would align with New York City’s planned subway system allowing access to the new railroad from the hotel basement. The original entrance to The Knickerbocker subway entrance can still be found tucked away on the end of the platform of Track 1 on the S shuttle between Grand Central and Times Square. Within months of its opening, the stunning Beaux Arts landmark had become the center of life in New York and perpetual activity, including the world-famous New Year’s Eve Times Square Ball Drop. It’s rumored the dry martini was invented right here in the hotel. Visit our History page to learn more.

  • We offer Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a meeting room and writing desks.

  • In its heyday, The Knickerbocker was where celebrities, politicians, playwrights, activists, pilots, and war heroes came shoulder to shoulder with opera singers, Imperial Russian ballet dancers, and rambunctious sports luminaries. The Knickerbocker has hosted a cast of characters, including the likes of world-renowned Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, American business magnate John D. Rockefeller, and American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, who gathered here in 1912 in what was then known as “The 42ndStreet Country Club.” Two of our Tribute Suites pay homage to the celebrated personalities who called the Knickerbocker home, Caruso and playwright George Cohan.
