A masterpiece above Times Square

In 1906, hotel founder John Jacob Astor IV commissioned American painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish to create a mural for The Knickerbocker hotel bar, also known as the 42nd Street Country Club. Astor was drawn to Parrish’s celebrated ethereal work and requested that the 30×8-foot piece depict Old King Cole. The massive triptych became intimately identified with The Knickerbocker and the city itself for nearly two decades. After the hotel closed, it eventually made its way to its current home at the St. Regis, another Astor hotel, in 1932, making it an iconic part of New York history for more than 100 years.

Here at The Knickerbocker, we honor the renowned painter with the serene and inspired Parrish Suite high on the 14th floor, impressing with an enviable corner view of 42nd Street and Broadway. To add an extra indulgence, guests will find crystal glassware from Waterford’s Lismore Black collection featuring the iconic Lismore pattern in both clear and rich black crystal.
